1. Grooved face: The flange has a precision-machined, smooth groove on its face.
2. Metallic gasket: A metallic gasket, which can be oval or octagonal in cross-section, is placed in the grooves of two mating flanges.
3. Metal-to-metal seal: When the bolts are tightened, the flanges compress the metallic gasket. Because the gasket is made of a softer material than the flange, it deforms and flows into the grooves, creating a tight metal-to-metal seal.
